Hawk,

Sometimes you really impress me. With how much knowledge of weapons systems you have, and then again, with how seemingly naive you are about the nature of imperialism and hegemony.

There aren't many who are still fooling themselves with the unobservant view that the U.S. is not attempting to become an empire. Twelve aircraft carrier based battle groups aren't the methods of a reticent and isolationist nation. Military bases and installations in 125 nations is something that only one nation on the planet maintains. Guess who? This doesn't equate to "national defense". It does amount to an assault on the natural resources of the entire planet, for the sake of "American interests". Which isn't you or me, but rather the greedy grasping of corporate owners. Though you seem to confuse your existence with theirs, for some obscure reason.

Re: Were we an imperial power, we would have colonized all of Europe and Japan after the war..

We did, in an economic sense. And we did occupy Germany and Japan for several years.

BTW, Hawkmoon, have your read PNAC's "Rebuilding America's Defenses"? You certainly can't have read that treatise of the neo-cons who now control the Pentagon and not believe that American Empire is the goal.

Here's a quick synopsis of the PNAC outlook on life:
