Michael,

The interesting thing about your posts is that they always lay out a point of view. No mistaking it. But they never make an argument for it. No sub arguments for the point of view. No structure of evidence for the point of view. Just a different point of view. And you know we disagree on points of view.

So, as always, I find it almost impossible to have a conversation other than to say, you are wrong, at which point you must say I am wrong, etc.

The problems with education in some portions of urban America are very, very complicated. I prefer a mix of the innovative curricular work of places like Central Park East, which is John Dewey's progressive education brought into the latter decades of the 20th century and applied in the most unlikely of places with spectacular results--kids graduate and go to the very best colleges.

But places like Central Park East need money, need imaginative teachers and administrators.

And, we must realize that education does not take place in a vacuum. The degree of absentminded misery we, all of us, administer to these urban areas is matched only by the similar degree to which we ignore the suffering in parts of Africa. Note this piece from this week's New Yorker.
