:-( How can we make the West care? I have started teaching about Africa in my classes. We are doing Oliver Twist right now, and as part of our lesson we studied a bit about child hunger and poverty NOW- in American, and in various places in Africa, Asia and South America. Many of my students had no idea where any of the African countries were- we always use a globe when we talk about countries, so we know where we are. Of course when we did current events they couldn't find Grenada, Mali, Rwanda (which I grant you is hard to find), or Berlin without my help. sigh. I don't know WHO is teaching these kids geography (or if anyone is) but I've decided to pick up some of the slack.
