New nat gas guzzlers in Mexico:
TransAlta switches on Mexican power plant Reuters, 05.28.03, 6:55 PM ET
CALGARY, Alberta, May 28 (Reuters) - TransAlta Corp., Canada's top investor-owned power generator, said on Wednesday it fired up a C$310 million ($202 million) power plant in Mexico, the first of two projects in the country slated to start operations this year.
Mexico's state utility, Comision Federal de Electricidad, has bought all of the power from TransAlta's new 252 megawatt gas- and diesel-fired plant, located in the state of Campeche, under a 25-year contract.
TransAlta, which also runs gas-, coal- and wind-power plants in Canada and the United States, started building the Yucatan Peninsula generating station in March 2001.
That month, the company won a bid to build a 259 MW gas-fired plant in the northern state of Chihuahua. That project is expected to start commercial operation in the third quarter. |
