It's a breezy read, I can see why Hitchens says it's a superficial look. But it isn't without value. The book is an homage to Bloom, but Bellow dwells on his day to day activities, the restaurants they frequent, their strolls through Paris streets, etc. Maybe those who were looking for a more in depth study of Bloom were disappointed. But the little vignettes related in the book are very revealing of the real man, and they're told in a style that uses a lot of dialogue. So basically the reader gets a chance to eavesdrop on conversations that Bloom and Bellow had. Nothing so bad about that! A lot of it is LOL funny and it's peppered with interesting insights and reminiscences.
