Not to minimize the problem, (I am semi-scared about the whole thing) but the examples of the chips in automobiles, elevators, etc. don't seem logical to me. It seems as though the chips would interact with software somewhere and serve more of a "sensor" function. Would an embedded chip actually be hard coded with a date calculation, or would it more likely be counting days (or seconds) since a certain event (perhaps initialization). Seems like the real problem is in the associated software.

I can clearly see the software problems. Could someone think of an example of how an embedded chip might behave, what its function might be?
