I think you're confusing the MAN and the WAN. MAN is pure infrastructure, like fiber optic cable for instance. OFDM (a la WiMAX) will be used to fill in the gaps for fiber and build out to rural areas. I don't see what contention you see in this area? Do you think FTTC and FTTH are going to happen anytime soon? This is what .16a was built for (while consideration was given for the mobile extension to follow).

Regarding OFDM in the MAN and potential bubbles, I don't see the overinvestment you talk about since nothing has been built yet. As for cdma in the WAN, the clock is ticking and it's going to take a lot more than the current systems to defend against the onslaught of .16e...
