Consequently putting 84-pin sockets on new circuit boards or cards was not out of the question and easily accomodated.

Dee Jay, easily accomodated but the circuit board has to be re-designed, well at least partially. The socket's are different size so most likely what happened is they had to move other components on the board to accomodate the larger socket but that results in time to make the design changes plus building and assembling new boards. Also they would most likely (but not absoulutley) have to resubmit the boards to the regulatory agencies for approval. All this takes time and the days click by and at that time the x2 was taking off.
