You might try using a small feeder, the kind that attaches to the window with a couple of suction cups. I've used that kind, and I may again, now that I think about it. The one I have looks like a horseshoe bar, a four or five seater. Since they only accommodate a few birds at a time, they don't draw a big enough crowd to create a guano mound. And an advantage is you get really close to the birds. The other advantage is that the squirrels can't get to it.
You could also be proactive and dust off or hose down the affected area every few days to stave off the neighbor's reaction.
Or you could just wait until whatever disease it is that bumped off the house finches on the east coast reaches you...
Change of subject. I thought about you a few days ago when I was in a shop that sold hijabs, etc. I remembered our discussions on Middle Eastern women's wear. It was a fairly large store for a little strip mall, selling crockery, groceries, general household stuff, videos, and, in a little nook, women's clothing from the old country. Don't know exactly which old country. There are Iranian and Palestinian restaurants in the mall, which is why I was there, so maybe one of them. Anyway, there was one display that had hijabs packaged in plastic bags and stacked. And right next to them were what looked to be to be belly-dancing costumes. Lots of jewel-encrusted bra tops. I got a real kick out of the juxtaposition. And no, I didn't buy either item.
I may just put that little feeder back up this winter. It's hard to rain down too many seeds with a little feeder.
And yes, Charley, I only use the best seed. There is a store devoted entirely to bird feeding right in my neighborhood. Lots of people feed the birds. I don't think they're starving for want of my offerings. |
