I was in the habit of opening the door and letting the dogs run out ahead of me. For whatever reason I didn't do that that evening. I often wondered what would have happened if we had done the normal routine.

We get the small black bears around here. I hear there are five within a fairly close radius. They don't seem to bother too many people, except for the lady who closed her garage door on one. She called my neighbor all frantic, asking him what she should do. He said, "Open the door."

I imagine in your neck of the woods the bears are a bit bigger, and more numerous.
