Israel to Withdraw From West Bank City Centers, Ha'aretz Says

May 30 (Bloomberg) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will order the withdrawal of soldiers from the centers of West Bank cities, the Israeli daily Ha'aretz reported, citing Sharon's office following his meeting with Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas.

Sharon and Abbas met in Jerusalem late Thursday in advance of a summit with U.S. President George W. Bush on a peace plan aimed at forming a Palestinian state in three years. Sharon told Abbas the Palestinians should work to take security control of those cities as Israeli forces withdraw, the newspaper reported on its Web site.

The Israeli prime minister demanded ``100 percent effort'' against violence from the Palestinians in handed-over areas, Ha'aretz reported. Abbas updated Sharon on his work to rein in the activities of Hamas, a group branded a terrorist organization by the U.S. for its attacks on Israeli civilians, the newspaper said.

Bush will meet with both men in Jordan on June 4.
