I think Bob is thinking like a geek.

I don't think that most users will pay extra for "cool" features. A few will. A few will pay extra just because they want to make a contribution to a noble cause.

I have no doubt that Bob would pay extra for "cool" features. But he (like myself) is a computer geek.

Computer geeks need to think outside of their geek-boxes.

When they can do that, they are really dangerous. :)

The other problem that I see is that many of the features that he is proposing for "premium" status are things that are just plain good design. Example: being able to read an arbitrary number of headers at a time. The problem I see is that you may be sending the wrong message by asking users to pay extra to fix stuff that is arguably broken.

Ditto for search. Search is part of the base functionality for any web site with any substantial content.
