When you say that the ASIC market is being tested, do you mean that they are trying to design AND manufactur ASICs, or just manufactur ASICs to the spec's of a US designer/manufacturer? My impression is that ASICs are a much more difficult market to get into since virtually every product is non-standard. To become an effective player that both designs and manufacters, it seems to me that they would need to either license other cores and/or cell libraries, or purchase and/or enter joint ventures with established ASIC manufactures that already have a useful library. For example, Hundai has gotten into ASIC manufacturing by buying the ASIC division of ATT a few years ago (It used to be part of NCR, and the company is now SymbiosLogic.).

The alternative would be that the Taiwanese Fabs would just do custom manufacturing for US/Japanese/European design houses. How easy would it be for a Fab to develop the capacity to manufacter a many different ASICs, given the large number of unique processes for ASIC manufactur?

I also agree strongly with you that the valuations of a number of equipment companies are rather high, in particular LRCX and AMAT. IMO, however, I do not think that they have reached the completely absurd value of Coke and MacDonalds.
