Hello Frank, Never enough acronyms. Why they add legitimacy to everything including network design.

I think you are quite right about FSAN. Once a standard is in place, tested and working its not likely to be tossed out. Rather it evolves and forces conformity. Over at GTR, they talk about disruption when it suites them and the need for 1000 lb gorilla overhauls when that suites them. They point out how x86 won the chip architecture but insist that Sonet must be tossed out for GbE...even though 10 GbE bent over backbonewards to be sonet friendly. The cost of the build required and the connect cost for end users will only work if standards prevail and lots of cheap, standardized access/management boxes are built. 802.11 is selling, not because it uses deregulated spectrum, but because it is dirt cheap and good enough to get the job done.

That said, perhaps others can comment on whether or not there are sound reasons to toss sonet. Do you need different framing for video apps? Can advanced telephony services be managed by VOIP over "native" ethernet?
