Bush's Approval Rating Drops
VOA News
31 May 2003, 21:46 UTC

A poll by Newsweek magazine indicates that President Bush's job approval rating has fallen from 65 percent to 61 percent.

The poll published Saturday found that the president has scored high for his handling of national security and foreign policy, but lost ground on domestic issues.

Of those polled, 72 percent supported Mr. Bush's efforts to combat terrorism at home, and 59 percent praised his handling of the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis.

But Mr. Bush was only backed by 46 percent of the public for his management of the sleepy economy. His recent tax cut package was approved of by just over half (51 percent) of those polled.

Concern about terrorism is more prevalent than ever following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Of those surveyed, 85 percent said another terrorist attack on U.S. soil is very or somewhat likely.

The Newsweek poll surveyed one thousand and nine adults on Thursday and Friday. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
