mmmary, CPM rates have plumetted. You have to discount this type of site even more, because the ads are effectively transparent to users - they just blot them out of their mind, don't even see them.

It's the repetitive nature of thousands of posts. Either the users blot out the ads, or they become so intrusive that they interfere with use of the site.

Forget about click-through and buy-through rates. The effect rate is even lower than CPM ads.

Not an SI-specific problem. It's the reality of the net.

The services (quotes, etc.) I can take or leave, myself. I think a lot of users probably do appreciate having it all in one place. All of this stuff can be had for free, as long as you let the service provider sell ad space, so I don't see any point in eliminating them.
