Ibexx et al,

The PPC740/750 "Arthur" (not Author) chip is the follow-on to the PPC603e used in some of Apple's PowerMac's and clones. As the press release states, the only speed grade available initially will be the 266 Mhz version (350 Mhz comes later). IBM/Motorola intend for these parts to go into any machine they can get them into. However, they realistically are intending primarily to keep Apple/Power Computing afloat as an alternative to Wintel and to go after the Windows NT server market.

One place where this product may be a threat is in PowerMac notebooks. The 740/750 runs at about 5W and probably has a performance advantage over the Tillamook. Still, Windows compatibility matters more than performance.
