Frank, Many thanks for the replies and references below. I need to revisit some of the PON literature as I do think you needs passives at as many levels as possible to make the net build affordable. On the longevity of Sonet as partly linked to "billability", I think you are dead right. That was interesting that a carrier internalized their GbE rather than testing a fixed rate scenario.

Your comment on the ILECs being all digital while the MSO are a mix of analog and digital has me intrigued. We evolved from analog to digital and some at the GTR would have us headed back to the analog domain (at least thats one of the fun visions there). But many of the advantages of "Being Digital" for communications still hold. It will be interesting to see of the purer digital networks of the Bells can over better services across voice, video and broadband. Actually, I can see where an all analog net could be efficient. I just don't think the component and management technologies for such are ready for prime time in the optical domain. Mixed networks will always suffer from "transslation" inefficiencies like the old O-E-O vs OOO debate.

I will sign off with one final question. What do you think about the most recent ADSL systems? How much life can be breathed back into copper. My guess is quite a bit.

Stay tuned.

Regards

Steve
