Actually, I think it is more complicated than that. A good part of the issue is that software programs were sold with free support and the only way the manufacturers were able to keep going was to "improve" their software. Of course, many times the improvements were:

1. Minimal and only applied to a few users; and
2. So buggy that the improved program was worse than the original.

The software people have learned a few things now. They continue to revise and "upgrade" and of course the upgrades are all more buggy than the prior version. And of course free support is minimal, if you get any at all.

The next technique is do not provide a useable manual. If you are charging for support, why supply a manual that will cut down the need for support? What really galls me is when you call for support and you find out the problem is a bug in their program (which they will never admit) and they charge you for thatn.

The result of all of this is less economic, ergo, less productive systems.

I think software would probably be better sold on a lease, where upgrades, and support would be supplied as part of the lease. This would reduce the incentive to change for changes sake, and to eliminate bugs and supply better documentation and support.
