I think the WMD issue will become a serious election issue only if the Iraq occupation goes terribly wrong.

I definitely agree with the proposition that should the occupation go badly, the wmd bit will be an issue. But that's not the only condition under which it could become an issue. The longer the Bush folk cannot come up with serious evidence of significant wmds with some independent verification of such, the longer various agencies will engage in investigating the matter. No telling what will come from that. Most likely, since the Reps control congress, nothing will. But once that wheel is set in motion, it can easily take on a momentum all its own.
