Huh? <According to the next issue of Vanity Fair magazine, Wolfowitz cited "bureaucratic reasons" for focusing on Saddam's alleged arsenal and said a "huge" reason for the war was to enable Washington to withdraw its troops from Saudi Arabia.

"For bureaucratic reasons we settled on one issue, weapons of mass destruction, because it was the one reason everyone could agree on," Wolfowitz was quoted as saying.

So the UN was supposed to have a war with Iraq because the USA wanted to move out of Saudi Arabia, as required by Osama Bin Laden. It looks as though Osama won. Being good sports, we should congratulate him on a great victory against the world's only superduperpower.

Couldn't they have taken the American people into their confidence on such an important issue of great public interest? It is a democracy - or so we are led to believe, where the people think about and decide what to do.

They shouldn't have to look far for the WMDs. The Iraqi soldiers took off in droves, ditching their uniforms, weapons and anything else. They certainly weren't worrying about burying weapons of mass destruction.

There are probably a few decade-old weapons which have been overlooked somewhere, or somebody has stashed with a view to a bit of mayhem locally, or maybe even to support Osama's crew. But my understanding is that most of such weapons have a short life. WMDs need to be used fresh.
