Don't worry about it

I have very thick skin. :)

I continue to believe that Y2K fears may well have worse societal impact than actual Y2K problems. If you look at history there is considerable evidence that fin de siecle periods invite all sorts of unheavals and outright craziness. The fact that we are dealing with a millenial change only amplifies the psychological impact. The year 999 was frought with "end of the world" manias and I see no reason to suppose that mass psychology has made appreciable progress in this area in the past thousand years. Sadly, 1999 may well see social unrest around the world such as has not been seen in our lifetimes. I have no doubt that there will be those who use Y2K as a means of veneering a pseudotechnical patina onto their apocryphal agendas. This is the unquantifiable element of Y2K that I personally worry about most.

In the meantime the best we can do is continue to try and understand the actual problems and challenges that Y2K poses and try to quantify their impacts and costs. Hopefully this thread will help to advance that cause.
