Standards bodies ITU, CEA get closer
By John Walko -- CommsDesign.com -- June 4, 2003 (5:40 a.m. EST)

LONDON — Two key standards groups in telecommunications and consumer electronics are forging closer links to better coordinate their efforts and avoid duplication.

The International Telecomunications Union (ITU) and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), have collaborated in the past, but both organizations said a more formal partnership will underscore their commitment to coordinate standards activities as their respective technologies converge.

Among the areas of potential cooperation between CEA and ITU-T are wireless and mobile communications, cable systems and multimedia technologies. The two groups aim to share resources and expertise in order to enhance international standards in these and other areas, they said.

ITU said it aims to foster more such relationships with other standards groups. According to Houlin Zhao, director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, "ITU has a significant role to play in the future of consumer electronics, [and] we have already played a major part in the development of the standards that allow Internet connectivity for the vast majority of people.

"We believe strongly that a policy of cooperation with other standards development bodies is the most efficient way to create a fair and free market for businesses and consumers," Zhao added.
