"Ugly situations" might give us best chance. It is clear to me that the leaders and a majority of both populations want peace. There is exhaustion on both sides. Both sides also realize that the things they are doing are damaging the psyche of their own peoples forever.
Sharon may have believed in greater israel for defense purposes but that wont work against terror. And what about more mundane questions like the once robust israeli economy. Or what about the 11th commandment, Thou shall be free to get on a bus or go to pizza parlor without being blown up. What about the young. God may have given the Jews the land but in many ways this has been a curse. Perhaps God intended the Jews to share this land.
And for the arabs, forget that their young die in terror attacks, their people lose their moral center doing these things. Abu Mazen knows this. So does the leader of Hamas. And what about their economic future. Perhaps Allah doesnt want Arabs to live in poverty and repression either? And perhaps the Arabs too have to bite the bullet and share this land, save their kids, give freedom to their people and move to a robust economic model.
This just may be the time. Great men become great when they seize the opportunity presented. Bush may be doing this now. Quartet by arse, this is unilateralism by the US just like the war. BEEB, NYTimes take note. Eliminate the sponsors of terror--iraq first and that hopefully becomes a glaring example to now cautious syria and iran and a now mobilized saudi arabia. Anyway thats the dream i have for today. mike@optimists'r'us.com
