FT.com Cisco in breakthrough deal with BellSouth Wednesday June 4, 7:20 pm ET By Scott Morrison in San Francisco Cisco Systems, the internet equipment maker, on Monday announced a breakthrough supply agreement with BellSouth, marking the first time Cisco has won a contract to sell optical networking gear to one of the major US regional phone companies. The deal, which is estimated to be worth several hundred million dollars, signals that Cisco has after many years finally demonstrated that its equipment is reliable enough to be installed at the core of a public telephone network. "It's a watershed event for Cisco," said Sterling Perrin, analyst at market research firm IDC. "This has been a huge question mark for Cisco for some time." Cracking the carrier market has been seen as critical to Cisco's growth prospects, given that large regional carriers such as BellSouth, SBC and Verizon account for more than half of total US telecommunications spending, which is estimated at $54bn this year
