CB, you don't throw a few hundred thousand people out of work without any transition help with no prospects for work in a shattered economy. Especially if they are well armed and know how to fight. And especially when there is plenty of money available to pay them.

De-Baathification is great. But a transition period of a year or so to get people integrated into the new economy will cost very little, buy lots of goodwill, and probably save a bunch of lives -- American and Iraqi.
