Smoking-related adenocarcinoma of the lung is now the most common cause of cancer death in the United States, according to findings presented at the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Researchers also confirmed a gradual shift in the histology of lung cancer, with the rise of adenocarcinoma rates corresponding to changes in cigarette design that have allowed smokers to more deeply inhale tar particles.[1]

Until recently, different forms of lung cancer were considered treatable by the same modality. But with the advent of targeted therapies, Dr. Vincent Miller of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York says it may be important to look at the different forms of lung cancer, as well as patient characteristics, to determine who will most likely be helped.

"We are starting to see some differences in how patients respond to treatments, at least with targeted therapies," said Dr. Miller. "There will be more attention paid to histology in the coming years."

As researchers at ASCO called for greater efforts to curb smoking, data were also presented on novel agents that may treat both smoking- and nonsmoking-related lung cancer. Dr. Miller discussed these advances with Medscape...
