Mobile Services to Grow to US$245 Billion by 2006

India and China will be the main drivers in the Asia-Pacific region, with total mobile telecommunication service revenues rising to US$245 billion in 2006 from US$107 billion in 2001.

A new Yankee Group report said the Asia-Pacific region had remained a refuge of relative strength, with both wireless subscribers and mobile service revenues continuing to expand at a steady pace.

"The most obvious business opportunities in Asia- Pacific will continue to come from the build-out of new networks over the next five years, although many of the original projections are now being revised downward," an analyst with Yankee Group Wireless/Mobile Asia-Pacific said.

"In tandem with the enhanced deployment activity, subscriber additions will come principally from China and India, with the latter accounting for much higher growth rates over the forecast period."

Another report said average revenue per user (ARPU) was set to decline slightly over the next three years. According to a new report from ARC Group, substantial increases in mobile subscriber numbers, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, would mean that the total mobile services market in US dollar terms would be more than double by 2007. Mobile data would also increase strongly over the next three years, rising from under 10% of operators' revenues in 2002 to over 20% in 2005, with further growth in prospect.
