If it were up to me, we wouldn't be running Iraq and trying to sort it out. Our presence would have been limited to funding, staffing and providing logistics for several thousand international monitors who would have made it impossible for even the most hypothetical WMDs to have posed a threat to anyone.

As it is, I suspect that "Iraqis" want three countries - a Kurdish republic, a Sunni state and a Shiite fundamentalist regime. India has slowly overcome divisions like that but only in a very imperfect way.

We shouldn't have this dilemma to solve in the first place. I know all the theories about nationbuilding. Since many frequently don't work, I don't have any other pat answers for those who got us stuck in this trap.
