RESEARCH ALERT- Ciena loses AT&T deal to Siemens
Monday June 2, 4:25 pm ET

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Bear Stearns said Monday that AT&T Corp. awarded a major contract to Siemens , marking a big loss for Ciena Corp. , which had been seen as a top contender for the deal.
"With signs of stronger-than-expected competition in optical space and loss of the AT&T contract, Ciena may have difficulty posting meaningful acceleration in revenue growth this year," Bear Stearns said in a research report. "Ciena could be forced to further cut its operating expenses -- possibly more aggressively than currently planned."

AT&T had been evaluating several vendors over the past 18 months for equipment that expands the capacity of fiber-optic networks. The top contenders were seen as Ciena, Corvis Corp. and Lucent Technologies Inc. , but Bear Stearns said it believes that Siemens won amid its major push to expand in North America through aggressive pricing.

"We view the news as negative for Ciena. The company was left out of the AT&T transport business and is also unlikely to get as prominent a role in the Gig BE project (a large government - Department of Defense infrastructure build)," Bear Stearns said in a research report.

AT&T could not be immediately reached for comment. Shares of AT&T gained 19 cents to $19.68. Shares of Ciena shed 15 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $5.60 in afternoon trading on Nasdaq. Siemens added 29 cents to $47.87 on the New York Stock
