Another possibility is that they didn't think it'd matter, after the war. They looked at the example of Clinton, getting away with felony lying, and decided that, in the current American political climate, there is no down-side to lying. They knew they'd get caught, (after the war, after the lie had served its purpose) and they decided their lie would then be forgiven and forgotten. Turn the page, focus on the next crisis. Americans have such short memories, and are ever-willing to forgive the sins of their heroes.
And they're probably right. If the Nation Building in Iraq goes according to the NeoCon plan, all pre-war lies will be forgiven. On the other hand, if, come election-time, we've got 400,000 troops in Iraq, and it still isn't pacified, then everyone (even many conservatives) will shriek: Bush lied! |
