People who say that all death is the same remind me of Cotton Mather looking for witches to burn. They aren't motivated by compassion, but the lack thereof. Good analogy! If morality was so easy as killing=bad, a lot of philosophers would be denied the opportunity to write tons of books on ethics every year.
