(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, will hold a press conference on Monday, June 9, 2003 at 11:30 AM on the steps of the Circuit Court of St. Louis County Courthouse to announce the filing of a lawsuit against Congressman Richard Gephardt alleging assault, abuse of process, malicious prosecution, and other civil wrongs. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Bill Federer, who ran for (and nearly won) election to Gephardt’s Missouri congressional seat in 2000. The campaign was the most expensive in Missouri history, and garnered the most votes for any Gephardt opponent. The lawsuit alleges that Gephardt and key campaign aides set up an assault of Federer in the midst of the campaign, and then manufactured a criminal charge against him. On January 9, 2003, Mr. Federer was found innocent by a jury that acquitted him of the false charges in just 25 minutes. |
