My comment:
This brings the road map to a dead end.
Abbas cannot deliver a cease-fire.
Which means the Israelis will not dismantle a single settlement, or withdraw their army.
And Bush will not put any pressure on the Israelis to do anything, in the absence of a cease-fire.

Do you seriously believe that it would change Hamas' mind, or give Abbas the ability to deliver a cease-fire, if he did? If you do, on what evidence do you believe this? If you don't, why do you wish for Bush to do things that are evidently useless?

Hamas is ideologically committed to killing the Jews and destroying Israel. The most they could offer is a hudna - a temporary, tactical cease-fire. And they're refusing to offer even that. Clearly, they feel they have the upper hand.
