Because of the desire to get and keep their land - like your private fenced nature preserve and retirement account. If you were true to the ideas you express on the internet frequently, you'd deed it over to the Grand Ronde tribe. But greed wins out.

What I'm quibbling about is your ignorant misidentification of one group for another and then defending that by saying they came over within 10 years of one another so why not just lump them together.

You need to frame your question better - what Indians, where? Before any English speakers crossed the Atlantic, the Spanish had wiped out entire peoples in the Americas. Squanto, the English-speaking Indian who showed up and befriended the Pilgrims and greatly assisted them, had been kidnapped from New England into slavery by the Spanish, escaped from Spain and made his way to England, where he learned English and got back to America by offering to guide and translate for earlier English explorers/traders.
