It's not love, the masses usually respect the presidency in times of crisis. And the public isn't dumb, just misled by masterful propaganda. Besides, he is an affable old drunk. Sort of like John Wayne, but with even less of a resume. Too bad it ain't just a movie.

BTW, Do you always blame the mark for getting conned?
