SEOUL, June 9 Asia Pulse - South Korea's exports of information technology (IT) products in May increased 16.3 per cent year-on-year to US$4.3 billion, the Ministry of Information and Communication announced Monday. The nation's IT trade balance was $1.12 billion in the black last month, forming 88.1 per cent of its total trade surplus of $1.27 billion, as its IT imports remained at $3.18 billion, the ministry said.
The ministry added, however, IT exports for the February-May period increased less than their average 20.7 per cent since January, 2002, due to the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and a truckers' strike in May.
Sluggishness in mobile phone exports to China severely dented IT exports as they fell 26.6 per cent from a year ago, the ministry said.
Laptops, monitors, mobile phones and semiconductors led growth rising 32.2 per cent, 11.8 per cent, 11.3 per cent and 10.0 per cent.
Telecommunication devices jumped 24.0 per cent to $1.25 billion, computers added 3.7 per cent to $860 million, parts of IT goods went up 10.6 per cent to $1.99 billion and broadcasting equipment surged by 218.1 per cent, a 32-month high, to $200 million.
Of computers and accessories, desktops and cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors fell, while laptops and liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors rose.
IT exports to the United States and Taiwan decreased 7.2 per cent and 13.1 per cent to $820 million and $220 million, respectively.
IT exports to China climbed by 66.0 per cent to $720 million, but the increase was an 11-month low, the ministry said.
Exports to Hong Kong and Japan rose 36.0 per cent and 23.0 per cent, while those to European Union gained only 1.1 per cent.
