I have never viewed favorably men who force educated, Westernized woman into medieval living conditions. Not that I approve of forcing women into medieval living conditions, period, but as an educated Western woman it's a form of torture that is personal to me.
Plus, I had contacts in Afghanistan who reported what a disaster they were - no improvement over the Russians. Just as I had contacts in Iran who reported what a disaster the Ayatollah was - no improvement over the Shah. You probably do, too, only you might not know it. If you take a taxicab, or eat at a Middle Eastern restaurant or shop at a Middle Eastern grocery, talk to the people who are working there. Taxicab drivers are very garrulous, it's just you and them in the cab.
After you ask, where are you from? Ask, do you like it here? Do you miss your home? How about your family at home? How are they doing? Is it a good place to live?
You'll get an earful.
I used to get my hair done by a woman from Afghanistan. Now, I have a Vietnamese lady, and get an earful from her. But that's me, I get people to tell me their life story everywhere I go. |
