but of course new boards were required - that's what I've been saying all along! nothing that different can be accomplished using the same old boards, and I seriously doubt that ANY upgraded products (not just modems) utilize the same boards unless the only change is in the embedded firmware - and even then boards get redesigned because often other changes/improvements are made that mandate it.

But designing and implementing a new board design can be done very timely - you can be sure that Rockwell brought Ascend into their plans early on when the Rockwell technology was still in the design stage. And if any rumors were around (as obviously they would have been) about other companies bringing forth 56K technology,it would have been necessary and desirable to have your largest customers in on the pre-ground floor since a horserace would ensue. So it's reasonable to believe that Ascend had plenty of design data in hand well in advance of any announcements and the board redesign was pretty much in place and boards on order at that stage.

Whatever you think of Ascend and it's management they are just too smart to make statements that don't hold water; in this instance I think something happened that badly upset their plans. Did they take too big a risk at the time? Is hindsight 20-20?

But the race is far from over - in my opinion the Rockwell-Lucent-Motorola solutions will be doing a Silky Sullivan now that production has been in full swing in all their foundries for a while - and they've got the production capacity to bring it about. Increasingly aggressive pricing will flood the market real fast. That's my prediction, FWIW. Let's revisit it when the Q3 results are in but check your newspapers for the pricing ads - by all vendors.
