Very similar problems, but somewhat different sets of causes.

Structual and social issues are a problem in the US-

In the US, the trial lawyers represent a drag of about 0.5 % of GDP, and that's increasing.

Inadequate education for signifiacnt parts of the US population, where X % of high school graduates can't really read, is another drag.

Very high medical expenses are also a drag in the US.

These things are politically hard to fix.
