Well, I'm sure Ascend was involved early on as you say. However, it is my understanding that in order to minimize the delay (relatively speaking), Ascend switched to using SRAM components on the higher density cards, and the consequence of that switch was more power draw and, you guessed it, more heat. Maybe it's true, maybe not. That's my understanding, though. Is it meaningful? That entirely up to you to decide.
