JUN. 10, 2003: NO SURPRISE

Some Rabbit, Some Hat - DAVID FRUM

So far, looks like Frum is right.

When President Bush committed his personal prestige to brokering an Israeli-Palestinian peace, some of us wondered why he was taking the risk. Was there some rabbit inside this worn-looking hat?

Apparently not. The roadmap is looking more and more like a collection of pious hopes and forlorn wishes, all the futility of Oslo without even the consolation of Oslo's illusions.

The administration is cajoling Mahmoud Abbas to crack down on terror organizations, but he has made it clear he cannot and will not. Now it is scolding Israel for responding to terrorist attacks, apparently in obedience to the old State Department story that if Israel sits still and allows its people to be murdered, the terrorists will eventually get bored and give up.

It is hard to imagine how somebody as tough-minded as George W. Bush could be party to something as gauzy and fanciful as this latest adventure. And it is amazing to me that the administration's many critics, who can be so scathing and skeptical when the topic is Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, can suddenly become so credulous when the topic switches to the latest diplomatic brainwave for bringing peace to the Middle East.
