Nextel Communications and its handset partner, Motorola, announced several location-based services today using iDEN handsets with built-in global positioning system.

The services include voice-enabled driving directions and asset tracking. The companies said developers are working on more applications.

The two companies cited LBS applications being used by General Motors and Avis. GM is using an LBS application developed by Gearworks, called 'etrace xt,' which allows field workers to manage their job schedules, while dispatchers can locate vehicles and communicate with workers. Avis is using Motorola's Viamoto at the DFW and Washington Dulles airports to give audible directions to car renters.

Nextel, Motorola and Symbol Technologies also announced the availability of a bar code scanner attachment for mobile phones, the Symbol PSM20i. The one-ounce scanner clips onto some iDEN phones, including the i88s and i58sr models.

In a separate announcement, MetaSolv Software said Nextel is using its network resource management solution to manage network and circuit inventory
