Gotcha - thanks for the update. I'm not sure the 2-3 X 9.6 KBPS is enough to get me to buy the hardware and set up my laptop properly. Then, as you suggest, my connection could still be questionable depending on coverage etc.

Maybe I'll just stick with the Globalstar connection this trip. It is adequate for E-Mail and emergency browsing @ 9.6 Kbps. I'd be willing to spend some money to get good adequate coverage in the 50 Kbps range though - maybe W-CDMA next year!

By the way, my Motorola World Phone was activated on Omnipoint in 98 as well! I maintain it only for European Travel, a few times a year, but it too has paid for itself many times fold! I just have to remember to transfer my calls to the travel line before I leave NY!

OT - we will be away from our 8 and 10 year old boys for 2 weeks. We did this a few years ago as well, and I have my home phones programmed so that they only have to press "2" to reach me anywhere in the world! We get calls from them throughout the day - the old "Chase hit me and called me names" garbage, but it really helps them and us feel close even when we are half a world away. We also E-Mail them pictures every day, which gives them somthing to look forward to.

I remember my parents traveling when I was a kid - they would be gone for 2-3 weeks, and we would get one call midway, with a 3 second delay - so bad that you could not hold a conversation. Anyway, I guess i go out of my way to be sure my boys don't feel that out of the loop.
