What I doubt is the unspoken corollary, that if the US changed its policy to be more "even handed", the Muslim world would change its mind... They're not mad because we favor Israel. They're mad because we won't help them destroy Israel.

This assumes that "they" are a monolithic entity, an assumption that is not entirely valid. One intention of a more evenhanded policy would be to provide incentive and justification for more moderate Arab states and more moderate individuals within less moderate states to deal more reasonably with the United States. There is no assurance that this would work, but there's little to be lost by trying.

A more evenhanded policy - specifically one that acknowledges that responsibility for creating and for resolving the current problems must be equally shared by the two sides - might also make American mediation a bit more credible. It is difficult for a traditional partisan of one side in a two-sided debate to act effectively as a mediator.
