It's IBM GLobal Services (hosting/IT outsourcing) that's a Citrix customer.

Microsoft purchased the core for Windows Terminal Server from Citrix. Extorted it from them, in my opinion. Anyway, they own it now as core code in WTS and successors, and Citrix received license fees and royalties, which they amortized over several years. It's all in the past, now.

As far as the symbiotic relationship goes, WTS (and Windows 2003 server, by extension) simply is no robust enough for large enterprise sized installations. Even Microsoft will tell you (in fact, they co-market MetaFrame) as a necessary add-on for large deployments. Citrix actually maintains sales and development offices in Microsoft's facilities in Redmond.
