Derek is from Houston, and I am from New Orleans, two sub-tropical places where roaches are so common and ubiquitous as to be a daily fact of life. Even good housekeepers have them, as good housekeepers elsewhere occasionally get ants, and if you don't have them in your house, they're running around outside. Little bitty roaches that we call "German roaches" (no offense)(they might be called "German roaches" due to their tendency to take over), great big roaches we call "palmetto bugs" (three inches long and they fly!) and a multitude in between. If you don't like roaches, don't go to New Orleans or Houston.

"Dying cockroach routine" is Southern-style humor. I guess it's a bit rough but we aren't smooth people. We have another expression you might not like, "don't get your knickers in a twist."
