Question about using external hard drives.

I use several computers and hate wasting time if I need to restore and reformat. So I have thought about buying an external hard drive which is very cheap, e.g $250 for 200 TGB, 7200 RPM, USB 2.0 and f/wire.

My questions relate to using this in the event of a catastrophe or with someone else's computer. I know this will be good for backing up data but I can do that with CD and DVD media.

If I copy the entire C drive to the external drive and then restore after a reformat, will this save time over reinstalling and configuring the programs I use which are Win XP PRO, Office XP pro, Quicken, Corel Office, TurboTax. Will the activation crap prevent this or will it recognize that it is the same computer?

How about if I were to buy a new computer and wanted to copy from the external drive to the C drive of the new computer. I would assume activation would prevent me from using.

I would also assume that I could not use software on my external drive on a friend's computer because of the activation issue.

I hope I'm being coherent in this post but my real question is whether this will save time as I don't really see the need to use it strictly as a backup given CD and DVD media.
