.....Here in the mid-Atlantic region, where the largest of U.S. offshore wind farms is proposed, developers moved their site farther out of eyeshot -- and out of the regulatory power of local officials -- after one Ocean City official called the plan an abomination. "The worst idea I ever saw," said James Hall, a member of the City Council and a real estate agent. "Would you want to look out on the ocean and see 350 windmills? Not me!"
Ultimately, the council refused to endorse the developers' plans. But Winergy LLC President Dennis Quaranta said he would not give up.
Now, all eyes are on the fate of a similar proposal in Nantucket Sound, where a rich and powerful coalition is working to stop the nation's first offshore wind farm. If the developer, Cape Wind Associates LLC, is successful, the 417-foot-tall windmills would be sunk deep into the ocean floor 6.8 miles off Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, within sight of the summer estates of the Kennedy families, Walter Cronkite and a variety of well-heeled CEOs.
The proposals have created awkward rifts among environmentalists such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and organizations such as the National Resource Defense Council, for which he works. While Kennedy has said he opposes the scattershot placement of windmills along the coast, the NRDC has carefully noted that his position does not necessarily represent the organization..... |
