Norton AntiVirus 2003 automatically detected and removed a virus (actually a trojan) from my computer today.

the object name was pav.sig
the virus name was Trojan.Prova

securityresponse.symantec.com

interestingly, there is a note on the symantec security response page that says:

"This Trojan does not function correctly under Windows NT/2000/XP"

it was detected on my win2000 machine.

i noticed some odd behaviors on my desktop last evening... browser windows suddenly and inexplicably being rapidly resized and rearranged, little remnants of previous opened windows appearing down near the quick launch toolbar, email client misbehaving, etc.

i even said to my wife, i am concerned that i might have an uninvited friend on my computer. i ran two different AV scans and nothing came up. but today, oddly, after running a full Kaspersky scan while i was away from the computer, i discovered upon returning that NAV had stepped in and knocked the Trojan.Prova over the head with a club.

i really am annoyed that these viruses are out there attempting to slither onto our machines. but i know that it will take an exceptional one to make its way past the layered defense i currently employ.

NAV did its thing, all on its own, and that's saving me problems right this minute.

edit in... just to be super sure, i'm now running KAV and then NAV on that computer, in safe mode, to see if anything triggers.

:)
